RL Drake Announces PEG Encoder Formally Approved by Three of the Top Six Major MSOs

Public, Education, and Government (PEG) Channels

SPRINGBORO, OH — May 19, 2015 — RL Drake announced today that the PEG-NE24 encoders have been formally approved for use by three of the top six major multi-system cable operators (MSOs). The encoders are designed to support public, education, and government (PEG) channels carrying local public access, school event, and municipal government programming.

“By listening carefully to top MSO needs, we developed these encoders that are optimized for the PEG application,” Executive Vice President Emily Nikoo noted. “Over time, PEG channels are being updated to HD as operators renew their franchise agreements. Due to the structure of these agreements, having the best performance for the lowest price is imperative. In addition to these three MSOs, the unit is also under evaluation at two more of the top six, as well as several midrange MSOs,” Nikoo continued.

Shipping of the PEG-NE24 encoders is underway. Operators can now efficiently transport SD and HD video and audio PEG signals over existing HFC networks, eliminating the need for expensive dedicated links or bandwidth-hungry analog sub-band solutions. The encoder sends signals from a local origination site back to the headend or hub location, so they can be multiplexed and broadcast, making it ideal for multipoint distribution applications.

A key highlight at Drake’s InfoComm booth will be the DSE 2 PLUS dual HD Digital Signage Encoder with multiplexed QAM output, originally based off of Drake’s industry-leading DSE24 HD Digital Signage desktop encoder. Integrators can utilize these encoders in cable networks, educational systems, hospitality, healthcare, and commercial or government facilities for digital conversion, digital signage, and PEG channel insertion applications.

While Drake’s DSE24 will encode a single uncompressed program derived from a source, the DSE 2 PLUS digitally encodes two uncompressed HDMI, high-resolution component video or VGA inputs to MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 (H.264), and then uses an internal multiplexing QAM modulator and low-noise upconverter to enable distribution of two HD programs over existing legacy fiber and coaxial networks while providing a superior reliability and consistent performance. Leveraging the bandwidth savings provided by the encoder, users can deliver twice as many HD programs or multiple channels at half the bandwidth. This enables users to tap into existing networks of digital HD displays to provide informational video, revenue-generating advertising, or promotional content in a vibrant high-definition format.

ND-24-IP Decoder

Drake will introduce its new ND-24-IP decoder, a low-cost professional device capable of decoding off-air, clear QAM, and IP content to SD/HD-SDI, HDMI, and Component outputs, which is ideal for digital signage applications, video link receive sites, or broadcast monitoring.

The ND-24-IP is a high quality HD or SD decoder that supports both MPEG-2 and H.264 video streams.  When paired with Drake’s PEG encoders (PEG-NE24-IP and PEG-NE24-IP-C), it can provide a high quality end-to-end IP video delivery solution.  The ND-24-IP features a LCD screen and a web-based GUI for simplifying setup and remote management.  The ND-24-IP supports both IGMPv2 and IGMPv3 protocols, which allows flexibility when configuring your IP network.

The Drake DNP50 / DNP50 AVW is a high definition Android™ platform-based network media player capable of playing multi-layered MPEG-2 video streams. Once loaded with content, the DNP50 / DNP50 AVW will output video stream resolutions of 480p, 720p, or 1080p through its HDMI output port.

The Drake DNP100 is a multi-output network media player capable of playing multi-layered MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 streams. Once loaded with content, the DNP100 will output video stream resolutions of 480p, 720p, or 1080i through multiple synchronized outputs including Component, HDMI, Composite, and VGA output ports.

The output ports on either media player then can deliver the enhanced bit rate SD or HD content to the Drake DSE24 HD Digital Signage Encoder, then to the SDE24A or HDE24A MPEG encoder modules for QAM modulation. The DNP100 includes the Drake Digital Signage Manager content management software.

Video Transport Solution (PEG/Decoder)

The combination of either the Drake PEG-NE24-IP or PEG-NE24-IP-C PEG Encoders matched with the Drake ND-24-IP Decoder offers a reliable Video Transport Solution from the field to a studio or editing station. The complementary encoder/decoder pair supports video encoding from HD/SD-SDI, Composite video sources and transports via IP to convenient editing locations where the video is decoded to HD/SD-SDI, HDMI, component, or composite video for monitoring, viewing or redistribution purposes.

The PEG-NE24-IP is a single HD-SDI input MPEG-2 or H.264 digital video PEG channel network encoder with IP output via a single SFP Ethernet port. The PEG-NE24-IP-C offers a single HD-SDI or composite video with left and right audio input and IP output. Digital video encoding and streaming is available in MPEG-2 or H.264 whereas PCM-embedded audio can be encoded to either Dolby® Digital AC3, MPEG1-Layer2, or AAC. Both PEG encoders are capable of outputting resolutions of 480i, 720p, and 1080i. The ND-24-IP is the ideal solution for professional video applications that require high-quality decoding of video signals from a wide variety of sources, particularly live video or data for transport over private networks. The encoders and decoder feature a Web-based GUI that is accessible via a dedicated RJ-45 control port, simplifying setup and remote management.

EH244 Solution for Flexible Encoding

At InfoComm, Drake will demonstrate its EH244 Series Encoder Host Chassis – an ideal platform for MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 H.264 video encoding needs due to its many flexible and configurable output options. Designed to house any combination of Drake’s popular HD and SD encoder modules (SDE24A, HDE24A, or SDI24A) the EH244 is designed with a total of six input bays and an internal multiplexer that allows the user to conduct custom program multiplexes and output them in any combination of RF QAM, ASI (transport stream) or IP based on the output configuration ordered.

By offering these options, customers can purchase a single output configuration based on an exact need to stay within budget or choose multiple output configurations to support both current and future needs such as RF QAM and IP. Common to all EH244 chassis is an RJ-45 Ethernet management port and an ASI data port for low data rate applications such as EAS (Emergency Alert System) and DTA set top box control data to support Drake’s “All Digital Bandwidth Recovery Solution.” For applications that require ASI for program stream distribution the Quad ASI option is recommended.

MIAMISBURG, Ohio — Sept. 9, 2014 — R. L. Drake today launched the PEG-NE24-IP, a stand-alone, single HD-SDI input MPEG-2 and H.264 digital encoder, designed to optimize multipoint distribution for public education, government, and sports applications. For applications requiring an analog composite video input due to source equipment capability, Drake has also introduced the PEG-NE24-IP-C encoder, which includes composite video and audio inputs. Using the PEG-NE24-IP or PEG-NE24-IP-C, operators can efficiently transport video and audio signals from a local origination site back to the headend or hub location so that they can be rebroadcast to cable subscribers, significantly lowering operational expenses while still meeting franchise obligations. The PEG-NE24-IP and PEG-NE24-IP-C encoders will be on display at the Drake booth 1710 at SCTE Cable Tec Expo, Sept. 22-25 in Denver.

“For public educational and government access channels, having a cost-effective, efficient, and reliable HD-ready encoding solution is critical,” said Andy Ruffin, vice president of sales at Drake. “Our new PEG-NE24-IP encoders include advanced encoding and networking technology designed to provide exceptional video quality at lower bit rates over MSO or telco fiber networks, making them ideal for public channels delivering a wide range of programming content, including high school sports events and live coverage of town hall meetings.”

The PEG-NE24-IP and PEG-NE24-IP-C can produce HD and a secondary SD program from one single HD source and output them via an SFP interface that includes copper and fiber output options, depending on the SFP module chosen by the user. A second RJ45 10/100 Ethernet port is provided for control and monitoring, which can also be configured to stream video.

EEG-QIP Electronic Enterprise Guide for Hospitality Applications At the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, Drake will launch the EEG-QIP, which provides MSOs with a reliable, cost-effective solution for producing programming guides for TVs without set-top boxes. Ideal for hospitality applications, the EEG-QIP allows operators to create and deliver a simple programming guide to TVs with clear-QAM tuners or properly mapped DTAs utilizing existing guide data. The unit automatically refreshes the guide information every five seconds and provides branded information to guests to improve the hotel TV service experience. Featuring a low total cost of ownership, this new solution opens up new revenue sources for operators and helps strengthen relationships with hotel management.

The DSE 2 PLUS uses an internal multiplexing QAM modulator and low-noise upconverter to enable the distribution of two HD programs over existing legacy fiber and coaxial networks while providing superior reliability and consistent performance.
